Health Food at Razzoo’s? Here’s What We’ve Got.

It’s true…Razzoo’s Cajun Café isn’t exactly known for our “health food.” We love everything fried and smothered in sauce, but we do have a few lighter things on the menu in case you’re looking for something that’s easy on the waistline and helps you stick with your New Year’s resolutions. If this is you, here are a few options we recommend:

Chopped Salad

This classic chef salad has it all! Great taste and tons of goodies to fill you up! (We can’t have you leaving hungry, can we?) Crisp greens are topped with bacon, cheese, tomatoes, cucumbers, diced eggs, and fried onions (hold those if you want). Want to add a protein? Choose between the blackened chicken and the popcorn shrimp.

Shrimp Salad Lettuce Wraps

While this is technically a starter, it makes a great meal for someone looking for smaller portions or a lighter lunch. These lettuce wraps feature a creamy shrimp salad that you scoop inside lettuce cups; served with fresh veggies on the side. So good, you’ll forget it’s actually healthy.

Peel & Eat Shrimp

Just plain ole peel and eat shrimp are one of our favorites! We Cajun boil to perfection, then serve cold with your favorite dipping sauces. Add a small side salad or order of veggies and you’ve got a complete meal.

Caesar Salad

We’re counting this because it is a salad, but our Caesar dressing is almost so creamy and delicious it’s a crime. The traditional Caesar salad is so good. If you’re looking to cut calories, ask for the dressing on the side so you can add to your preference.

Why Do Cajuns Eat Red Beans & Rice on Mondays?

If you’re a true Cajun, then you probably know that for years, Red Beans & Rice was the traditional dinner of Cajuns across southern Louisiana on Monday nights. Maybe your dear ole Granny still serves in on Mondays and you’ve never had a clue why. Why Monday? Why not Wednesday? Was Friday not good enough? Let us fill you in on a little bit of Cajun history on our beloved Cajun side:

Why is Monday Red Beans & Rice Day?

Women of old were very rhythmic with their weekly schedules. In the late 1800s and even early 1900s, their role was to keep house and cook. Typically, this meant Mondays were laundry day. Laundry was a time consuming task (can you imagine doing a week’s worth of laundry by hand without a washing machine?), leaving little room for cooking a huge dinner, so dinner needed to be easy, yet satisfying.

Enter the kidney bean.

Kidney beans arrived in southern Louisiana with Haitian refugees in the early 1800s and made a perfect Monday night meal because they were easy to slow cook for hours with little supervision. Traditionally, Cajun women would slow cook the beans with the “Cajun trinity” of onions, peppers, and celery, whatever meat was leftover from their Sunday meal the day before, and any other assorted Cajun spices they felt like throwing in. The beans were typically served over a bed of hot white rice, completing the perfect Cajun comfort food.

The Sazerac – The New Orleans Favorite

So many great cocktails have come out of New Orleans, and the Sazerac is no exception. Some say it’s the oldest cocktail in America! As legend has it, it was first concocted by a pharmacist named Antoine Amédée Peychaud in his pharmacy on Royal Street using brand, bitters, sugar, and absinthe. Tastes and times have changed, and so has the Sazerac, but it still remains incredibly popular.

Try the Grilled Lemon & Cherry Sazerac at Razzoo’s Cajun Cafe!

As your favorite Cajun food restaurant, we’d be remiss if we didn’t offer our own specialty twist on this pre-Civil War, New Orleans classic! Delicious Jack Daniels is the star of the show in our Sazerac, along with filthy Italian cherries and grilled lemons. So good. And pairs great with a bacon wrapped Shrimp en Brochette and dirty rice…just sayin’.

Make the Sazerac at Home!

No time to visit us at Razzoo’s this week? Impress your friends with this tasty Sazerac – at home! Here’s our recipe (your welcome):

1.  Start by pouring a few dashes of cherry and lemon bitters in a cocktail shaker.

2.  Next pour in about a tablespoon of cherry juice, a teaspoon of simple syrup, and 4-5 filthy Italian cherries.

3.  Muddle all ingredients in the glass to combine flavors.

4.  Grab your serving glass and just coat the glass in absinthe; pour the rest out. (You just want to add a little flavor here!)

5.  Return to your muddled mixture and add a little ice, 2 oz. of Jack Daniels, and shake!

6.  Strain and pour in your glass to serve. Garnish with lemon slices and cherries. Enjoy!
