Understanding Cajun Cuisine: Gumbo vs. Jambalaya vs. Etoufee

Look, we get it.

You weren’t Cajun born and bred, and while you love our down home Southern cookin’, it’s kind of hard to know what to order. Gumbo, jambalaya, and etoufee…they’re all really the same thing, right?

At Razzoo’s Cajun Café, we’re here to set the record straight on the differences between these delicious Cajun dishes.

What is the difference between gumbo, jambalaya, and etoufee?

Gumbo is more of a Cajun soup, generally started with a rich roux, and then many vegetables and different types of meat. Etoufee is a thicker dish that is less soup-like and will normally only have one type of meat. Crawfish is the most popular meat in etoufee, but you will also find shrimp etoufee. Jambalaya is similar to gumbo, but the rice is cooked into the dish vs. being cooked on the side.

The Best Cajun Food in Texas – Razzoo’s Cajun Café!

Sound complicated? It isn’t! Just remember they are all delicious and you really can’t go wrong with any of them. Here’s what you can expect from each of these dishes at Razzoo’s Cajun Café:

Razzoo’s Gumbo

Get our Razzoo’s Gumbo one of two ways: chicken and Andouille sausage based or seafood based with shrimp, fish, and oyster. Both come with a rich, spicy roux, rice, okra, and other veggies. Get the big bowl if you’re hungry  - or grab a small bowl for on the side.

Razzoo’s Etoufee

Our Razzoo’s Etoufee starts with a rich, dark roux, and then is cooked with your choice of chicken, shrimp, or crawfish and served with dirty rice and some thick, French garlic bread.

Razzoo’s Jambalaya and Gator Tail

We’ll fill you in on the best way to eat our Razzoo’s jambalaya: with the gator tail of course! Gator tail is our most popular entrée at Razzoo’s and for good reason. Tender gator tail is grilled to perfection, then served over a bed of jambalaya with our BBQ “ouch” sauce on the side.

Bottom line: whether you want gumbo, etoufee, or jamabalaya – Razzoo’s Cajun Café is the best place to get it!

You’re Invited to our Birthday Celebration at Razzoo’s Cajun Café!

Let’s get this party started!

Each year at Razzoo’s we love celebrating our birthday by thanking those that make it possible – our amazing guests of course! So what does that mean for you? Drink specials, swag, surprise giveaways, and maybe a few more tricks we’ve got up on our sleeve.

Tell us more!

Glad you asked! Our Razzoo’s Birthday Bash will take place on Wednesday, June 13. It’s an all day event, with drawings, prizes, and of course, drink specials! In addition to some delicious deals on craft beer and cocktails, our birthday celebration marks the beginning of a brand new tradition – Winey Wednesday.

What is Winey Wednesday?

Every Wednesday beginning June 13, you can visit your local Razzoo’s Cajun restaurant in Texas or North Carolina and get any glass of wine for half price! That’s right – all day long! Reds, whites, roses, and sparkling wines are all half price by the glass. It’s a great chance to try something new at a fraction of the cost. Or a chance to get two glasses of your favorite for the price of one. It’s whatever floats your boat. All we know is, Winey Wednesday is the place to be for lunch, happy hour, or dinner.

New Wines Added for Summer!

And just in time for our Winey Wednesday promo, we’ve added two more wines to the wine list for summer: Charles & Charles Rose and a Joel Gott Sauvignon Blanc. If you haven’t heard, Rose is the hottest wine around right now, and we love the crispy, light flavor of the Charles & Charles Rose. As for the Joel Gott Sauv Blanc, it’s the perfect compliment to all the spicy Cajun favorites on our menu. Gator Tail, red beans & rice, and a glass of Joel Gott Sauvignon Blanc please!

Join us Wednesday, June 13, for our Razzoo’s birthday celebration! We can’t wait to party with you!
