George Toomer: The Artist Behind the Menu

Ever see the Razzoo’s artwork on an ad and think, “yep – that’s Razzoo’s” before you ever see the restaurant name?

Our artwork – in advertising, on our menu, and around the restaurant - is fun, eclectic, and unique, and we owe that style to the great George Toomer.

Buffalo George – The Artist

George, or “Buffalo George,” as many called him (no one seems to know why), had a unique style, iconic style of art that he lent to many brands during his career, and we were honored to be one of them. In fact, he received over 200 advertising awards during his career, awarded for designing commercial artwork, logos, and icons. His style was truly one-of-a-kind, light-hearted and quirky, just like the man himself.

Jack of All Trades

But good ‘ol George, he was more than just an artist. He was a full-fledged jack of all trades. In the 1970s and 1980s, he considered himself a “minor Dallas celebrity,” making a name for himself as a designer, TV personality, writer, and social critic with a comment about just about anything.

During that time period, George was making a name for himself in Dallas and beyond. He wrote for the Dallas Morning News and Texas Monthly, as well as People Magazine, putting his signature satirical spin on just about everything he penned. He gave his own restaurant critiques in WFAA’s PM Magazine. He also appeared in his own TV show in Baltimore, as well as making guest appearances on the Today Show, 20/20, the CBS Morning News, and Real People. Basically – Buffalo George had opinions on everything and he was willing to share with just about anyone who would listen.

One of Our Own

George Toomer passed in 2009, but his legacy at Razzoo’s Cajun Café lives on. We love George’s quirky style and how it’s defined so much of our business at Razzoo’s. He just “got us” and our mission, to bring great Cajun food to great people, and he did it a way that was lighthearted and down-to-earth. We don’t take ourselves too seriously and neither did George.

The next time you’re at Razzoo’s and chuckle at the menu art, raise a glass to good ‘ol Buffalo George. It’s what he’d want ya to do.

3 Reasons to Visit the World Famous Breaux Bridge Crawfish Festival

If you love crawfish and all things Cajun as much as we do, then do yourself a favor and mark your calendar now for the world famous Breaux Bridge Crawfish Festival!

Coming Soon: Breaux Bridge Crawfish Festival

May 4-6, 2018

Breaux Bridge, Louisiana

No, this event is not at Razzoo’s Cajun Café – or even in Texas for that matter - but it’s worth the drive. Each year the fine folks of Breaux Bridge, Louisiana throw the biggest Cajun crawfish party we’ve ever seen!

Why Breaux Bridge?

In 1959, Breaux Bridge was given the title of “crawfish capital of the world” by the Louisiana legislature. Determined to make good on such a prestigious title, the folks of Breaux Bridge began the festival in 1960. It’s grown each year, with nearly 40,000 flocking to Breaux Bridge each year for the festival!

What Can I Expect at the Festival?

Here are 3 reasons you must visit this festival:

·      Cajun Crawfish Galore: If you’re a crawfish fan, then you’ll think you died and went to heaven at the Breaux Bridge Crawfish Festival. Order up a bowl of crawfish bisque, a crawdog, fried crawfish, or just plain ‘ol Cajun crawfish boiled to perfection. No matter how you like your crawfish, there’s no shortage of ways to enjoy it.

·      Family Fun: Bring the whole family, because there are rides and midway for all! Arrive early on Sunday to experience the fanfare of the parade, with beautiful floats and of course – more crawfish.

·      Soulful Zydeco Music: As Texans, we don’t often hear the soulful sounds of Cajun Zydeco music. All the best Zydeco and Cajun bands play the Breaux Bridge Crawfish Festival, so plan to take in the sights and sounds, or even enter one of the dance contests!

Make your calendars to visit the Breaux Bridge Crawfish Festival, and in the meantime, visit us at Razzoo’s Cajun Café for freshly boiled crawfish ready to be devoured! We’re the best Cajun restaurant in Texas for a reason.

Nothing says festive like a big ole fish bowl of Gator Punch! The drink serves up to four – if you’re willing to share! – and is filled with 6 different liquors. You’ll even get complimentary beads to wear and 2 ft. long straws to slurp it down. Let’s just call it the trash can drink to top all trash can drinks.

Craft Beer

Call you local Razzoo’s Cajun Café and find out what’s on tap now! We love sourcing craft beer from local artisans, many of which are right here in the great state of Texas. Of course, we’re also partial to our roots, and that’s why you’ll find brews from Louisiana’s own Abita Brewing Co. as well. Many of our locations offer pint nights and tastings too; just ask the bartender about it the next time you’re in.

Swamp Thang

Get crazy with two of our most popular Cajun drink specials mixed into one! The Swamp Thang is a blend of our Mardi Rita and Hurrycane Hell, drizzled with melon and raspberry liqueur on top. Too chicken to give it a try? Then just opt for either the Mardi Rita or the Hurrycane Hell by itself. Both are classic Cajun cocktails you’re sure to love.

Bringing the Tastes of Louisiana to You: Abita Brewing Company

Razzoo’s Cajun Café is proud to serve and support so many amazing craft breweries from around the state of Texas, but did you know we offer some Cajun favorites too? One of the most popular: craft beer from Abita Brewing Company.

If you’ve spent any time in or around New Orleans, then you’ve heard of Abita Brewing Company. Founded just 30 miles north of New Orleans in the tiny town of Covington, Abita Brewing is cranking out some of our favorite craft brews. (If you’re ever in or around New Orleans, be sure to visit their killer taproom for tasting and tours.)

But what makes them any different from the rest of the beer we serve?

·      Handcrafted Small Batches: When quality is of utmost importance, you brew your beer in small, easily controlled batches. Such is the case with Abita Brewing. A team of experts takes pride on overseeing the process, testing each batch to ensure perfection.

·      Abita Springs: Beer starts with water, and the purer the water – the better the beer. Abita Brewing gets all of its water from deep wells that pull water up from Albita Springs, providing the purest water around. We’ll just call this one a major geographic advantage.

·      Finest Ingredients: Abita sources its ingredients from around the world, because only the best will do. Hops from the Pacific Northwest, British and North American barley, and German yeast strains are just a few of the ingredients that set this beer apart.

·      No preservatives or additives: What you see is what you get with Abita Brewing. They add no preservatives, stabilizers, or additives – cranking out the purest, freshest tasting beer around.

Want to give Abita’s brews a try? Visit your local Razzoo’s Cajun Café in Texas and ask what’s available. A few of our favorites include Turbodog, Amber, Purple Haze, Strawberry Lager, and Seersucker Summer Pils.

Razzoo’s prides itself on being the best Cajun restaurant around, serving up a wide selection of craft beer from Texas, Louisiana, and beyond.
