Storms A’Brewin! – Tall Tales of the Hurricane Cocktail

“Storms a’brewin!”

More than just a description of the weather, back in the old days that phrase got you a FREE drink! Read on to learn more about the storied beginnings of one of our favorite cocktails here at Razzoo’s – the hurricane (or Hurrycane as we call it!):

The year was 1940, and in those days, Prohibition was a very real thing. Business owner Pat O’Brien opened a speakeasy in New Orleans, the perfect stop for sailors along their travels. If they wanted to get into the speakeasy, the phase was simple: “storms a’brewin.”

Once inside, sailors could order a variety of drinks, but one was free  - the hurricane. You see, getting quality liquor was difficult and the liquor suppliers knew it. In order to get even just a little bit of the good stuff, they made business owners order a ton of the cheap stuff. Well, Mr. O’Brien found himself with a heap of cheap rum and nothing ot use it for, so he came up with a plan. Why not mix it up with some fruit juice, then serve it to sailors for free as a gimmick to get them into his bar vs. others! The trick worked, but the joke’s on O’Brien because not only did they drink it – they liked it! The hurricane as we know it today was born.

The drink is still widely popular in New Orleans, and if you’re there, you’ll most likely see people carrying it around in plastic cups because carrying around glass cups are prohibited.

If you visit us at Razzoo’s Cajun Café, we can pretty much guarantee the best hurricane in Texas or North Carolina! It’s affectionately known as the Hurrycane on the Rocks, loaded with Bayou Select and Bayou Silver Rum, Don Q 151, grenadine, orange juice, and pineapple juice. It’s 22 oz. of fruit punch heaven, served in a hurricane glass with beads. What’s not to love?

Understanding Cajun Cuisine: Gumbo vs. Jambalaya vs. Etoufee

Look, we get it.

You weren’t Cajun born and bred, and while you love our down home Southern cookin’, it’s kind of hard to know what to order. Gumbo, jambalaya, and etoufee…they’re all really the same thing, right?

At Razzoo’s Cajun Café, we’re here to set the record straight on the differences between these delicious Cajun dishes.

What is the difference between gumbo, jambalaya, and etoufee?

Gumbo is more of a Cajun soup, generally started with a rich roux, and then many vegetables and different types of meat. Etoufee is a thicker dish that is less soup-like and will normally only have one type of meat. Crawfish is the most popular meat in etoufee, but you will also find shrimp etoufee. Jambalaya is similar to gumbo, but the rice is cooked into the dish vs. being cooked on the side.

The Best Cajun Food in Texas – Razzoo’s Cajun Café!

Sound complicated? It isn’t! Just remember they are all delicious and you really can’t go wrong with any of them. Here’s what you can expect from each of these dishes at Razzoo’s Cajun Café:

Razzoo’s Gumbo

Get our Razzoo’s Gumbo one of two ways: chicken and Andouille sausage based or seafood based with shrimp, fish, and oyster. Both come with a rich, spicy roux, rice, okra, and other veggies. Get the big bowl if you’re hungry  - or grab a small bowl for on the side.

Razzoo’s Etoufee

Our Razzoo’s Etoufee starts with a rich, dark roux, and then is cooked with your choice of chicken, shrimp, or crawfish and served with dirty rice and some thick, French garlic bread.

Razzoo’s Jambalaya and Gator Tail

We’ll fill you in on the best way to eat our Razzoo’s jambalaya: with the gator tail of course! Gator tail is our most popular entrée at Razzoo’s and for good reason. Tender gator tail is grilled to perfection, then served over a bed of jambalaya with our BBQ “ouch” sauce on the side.

Bottom line: whether you want gumbo, etoufee, or jamabalaya – Razzoo’s Cajun Café is the best place to get it!

Cheap Dealz De’Jour – Lunch Specials at Razzoo’s Cajun Café

Lookin’ for a deal?

Then you’ve come to the right place!

Razzoo’s Cajun Café has a lunch menu chock full of your favorites, in slightly smaller portion sizes so you don’t have to waddle back to the office. And bonus – they’re cheaper so it’s easier on your wallet too!

Killer Lunch Specials in Texas

Join us at Razzoo’s each weekday (that’s Monday-Friday folks) until 3pm and enjoy one of your Cajun favorites for only $8.99. Here are a few of the lunch menu offerings:

Pecan Catfish

Leave it up to Razzoo’s to cook the best fried catfish around, smother it in our sweet, tangy meuniere sauce (it’s a browned butter and lemon sauce), then serve it on a bed of white rice. Lunch never tasted so good!

Salad & Gumbeaux

It’s exactly what it sounds like: get a soup and a salad! For the soup, choose between either our seafood or chicken and sausage gumbo. For the salad, let us know if you prefer the Chopped Salad or the Caesar Salad. Of course, both come in perfectly sized lunch portions, so you can chow down with no guilt. Even order a craft beer to go with it. Hey, you’re having a salad…you’ve earned it!

Hurricane Shrimp

If you’re a fan of fried shrimp, then you’ll want to give this Texas lunch special a try! Each shrimp is butterflied, battered, and deep fried, but what really makes these delectable shrimp stand out is the sauce. Be prepared to be licking the bowl of our spicy honey pepper Hurricane sauce! Yes, it’s that good!

Grilled Chicken Etouffee

Razzoo’s is known for our crawfish etouffee, but have you ever tried the chicken version? It’s pretty dang tasty too. We use the same rich, dark roux, but instead of seafood, we add chunks of grilled chicken breast. Served over a bed of dirty rice, be prepared to dig in!

When looking for the best deal in town for lunch, don’t forget about your friends here at the Razzoo’s Cajun Café! For just $8.99, choose one of your Cajun favorites and then order a beer to round out the meal.

George Toomer: The Artist Behind the Menu

Ever see the Razzoo’s artwork on an ad and think, “yep – that’s Razzoo’s” before you ever see the restaurant name?

Our artwork – in advertising, on our menu, and around the restaurant - is fun, eclectic, and unique, and we owe that style to the great George Toomer.

Buffalo George – The Artist

George, or “Buffalo George,” as many called him (no one seems to know why), had a unique style, iconic style of art that he lent to many brands during his career, and we were honored to be one of them. In fact, he received over 200 advertising awards during his career, awarded for designing commercial artwork, logos, and icons. His style was truly one-of-a-kind, light-hearted and quirky, just like the man himself.

Jack of All Trades

But good ‘ol George, he was more than just an artist. He was a full-fledged jack of all trades. In the 1970s and 1980s, he considered himself a “minor Dallas celebrity,” making a name for himself as a designer, TV personality, writer, and social critic with a comment about just about anything.

During that time period, George was making a name for himself in Dallas and beyond. He wrote for the Dallas Morning News and Texas Monthly, as well as People Magazine, putting his signature satirical spin on just about everything he penned. He gave his own restaurant critiques in WFAA’s PM Magazine. He also appeared in his own TV show in Baltimore, as well as making guest appearances on the Today Show, 20/20, the CBS Morning News, and Real People. Basically – Buffalo George had opinions on everything and he was willing to share with just about anyone who would listen.

One of Our Own

George Toomer passed in 2009, but his legacy at Razzoo’s Cajun Café lives on. We love George’s quirky style and how it’s defined so much of our business at Razzoo’s. He just “got us” and our mission, to bring great Cajun food to great people, and he did it a way that was lighthearted and down-to-earth. We don’t take ourselves too seriously and neither did George.

The next time you’re at Razzoo’s and chuckle at the menu art, raise a glass to good ‘ol Buffalo George. It’s what he’d want ya to do.

Razzoo’s Gives Back: Buy Tito’s Cocktails and Help a Child in Need

One of our core values here at Razzoo’s Cajun Café is service and serving our community that supports us. It’s just the neighborly thing to do.

That’s why we’ve currently partnered with Tito’s Handmade Vodka to raise money for an organization near and dear to our hearts, CORE. CORE stands for “Children of Restaurant Employees” and each donation to CORE helps a child in dire living circumstances rise above and get the support he or she needs. This includes situations where there might be a loss of home, abuse, family illness, or even family death. Since 2004, CORE has been able to raise over $3 million to help about 350 families get back on their feet around the United States and in Puerto Rico! CORE doesn’t want to see the expenses that come along with these catastrophic life changes affect the quality of life for the children. Their goal is to ensure each child is well cared for and has what he or she needs to thrive.

Buy Tito’s Cocktails and Help CORE!

So how can we help? Glad you asked! It’s simple really: with every Tito’s cocktail purchased at Razzoo’s Cajun Café in Texas or North Carolina, Razzoo’s will donate $1 – and Tito’s will match that $1 donation! So for you slow folks, that’s a $2 donation for each and every Tito’s cocktail purchased!
